Paris, 1962. The subway is on strike, so the city has spilled onto these stairs in front of the Opéra like a great human river briefly held in place. What draws me in is that sense of interruption: the familiar machinery of the day has stalled, and suddenly everyone is exposed to the open air, to one another, and to the camera. You can feel the low murmur of voices, the shuffle of shoes on stone, the weight of briefcases and newspapers clutched a little tighter than usual.

The Opéra itself sits in the background like an elaborate proscenium, but the real performance is happening on the steps. The architecture is grand, almost pompous, yet it’s the crowd that gives it scale and meaning. Look at how the staircase compresses them into a single organism—each body with its own errand and worry, yet all flowing in one direction, up and out. There is no hero here, no central figure to follow; the eye roams, hopping from face to coat to gesture, assembling a story from fragments.

I love the small frictions: a man reading while he walks, a woman turned just slightly away, someone caught mid-thought, mid-breath. These are the unscripted moments when the city reveals its nervous system. Overhead, the birds cut across the pale sky, their effortless flight mocking the stalled transit below. The strike may be the reason everyone is here, but the photograph is about something quieter: the way an ordinary disruption opens a crack in time, and for a second we see the crowd not as background, but as the true subject of the city’s drama.
